At 3:45 yesterday a snow day was announced via School Reach the automated phone system. So today the kiddos stayed home. It was 18 degrees so too cold for them to go outside. They began to take on unique personalities: “the instigator”, “the whiner”, “the know it all” and “I have no face because it is facing a TV set or staring at the computer”. Ron was the enforcer and I was the cook with the massive headache.
Ron was able to escape to shovel the walks and go on grocery runs. I was trying to figure out how I could accomplish those tasks just to get out of the house. But shoveling with a cane was impossible. The kiddos did get their rooms cleaned and there were banishments taking place so thresholds would not be crossed by them. They had become very territorial of their spaces today.
We had singing, playing house, playing school, dancing, chasing and the refusal to play board games. The suggestion to work on a craft was proclaimed to be lame by the older and then echoed by the younger ones.
Tonight at 4:25 the phone rings and I hear Darren Powell’s voice announcing no school for tomorrow. Ron and I look at each and groan. Two grown adults near tears. The children, those precious beings, are whooping it up and chanting, “No school!”
So people when you see us and our eyes are red rimmed, our hair is a mess, our clothes are mismatched and we look to have been in a battle….remember we have been. Another 3 days of no school war. Keep us in your prayers…we are outnumbered.
Could be worse…could be more of them and more snow days.
