The world of gate belts.

We must not walk without a gate belt.  A gate belt goes around your waist and another person holds on to it to keep you from falling.  Some will give you a light tug to remind you to slow down, some use them like reins on a horse and some use it to catch you.

Today my gate belt got a working out, we used the wheelchair very little, I showed my walk at Target.  In my head the chant is slow, lift the foot, bend the knee, put down with heel and walk through with the right. That is a lot to think of to take a step.  How often do you think of walking, it is something we just do.  Now I have to concentrate and I literally cannot walk and chew gum, or talk and thinking of other things is not part of the equation.  The chaplain told me to take each step as a prayer.  I stumbled a bit in front of her and she chided me, I told her that was a hallelujah.

The chaplain finds me fascinating her words not mine.  She wants to take this time as a holy retreat and wrap it in sacredness.  I am to breathe in and out the breath of God.  I am not to worth about anything. She asked an interesting question, are my congregations concerned because they have fears?  I think they are concerned as I am in the unknown.

Dr Mike from the Methodist church came by to see me for himself.  He says the Methodist church has many trained lay speakers if the churches need someone.  He also spoke of my and the churches’ expectations in this process.

I have applied for a Sunday pass to go out, take the kids to a movie and just have time away for a bit.  Will find out if it is approved, I had to do some car transfers for part of the OK and did those well.  So now it’s up to Dr. Sam.

Well this party animal is calling it a night at 6:30 p.m.  as my daughter says..peace out

  2. keep up the hard work Dawn, it sounds like you are getting great therapy, I cannot believe there are no outpatient benefits! I wish you were closer. Just keep working super hard on consistent walking with the cane so you can safely get home, that is the ultimate goal, another couple weeks will fly by and quality walking and balance will be necessary for the rest of your future! Super important to try not to get any bad habits now that you have to undo later! You just keep those therapists and nurses on their toes – God shines through you to all you encounter, we will keep praying for an awesome recovery! Lynn and Russ
